Want to dress up that plain old ponytail? Or maybe you just want to find something a bit cuter and trendier than a regular bobby pin to hold those side-swept bangs in place while showing off that great new summer cut. Let's take a look at the different styles and kinds of hair accessories trending for summer...
Not just any headband! This summer be on the lookout for 'Alice Bands'...Alice, as in Wonderland. Aptly named for the wide plastic retro headbands she wore in the original cartoon. They're cheap, come in almost any color and happen to look especially fantastic on a 60's style hairdo with a little outward flip at the bottom of those lovely, loose locks.
PINS & BARRETTES
This season, floral and nature-inspired accents are really in. Think 'understated and simple' versus 'gaudy and overpowering' though. Make a bad hair day better by pulling it back in a bun or chignon and pin back any loose hairs with a crystal daisy barrette or a silver pin with tiny birds on it. Instant glam without overpowering. Expect to see barrettes and pins sporting jeweled insects, butterflies, and floral motifs this summer, but unlike the ones from ten years ago, these will be smaller, more elegant and classy.
BEADED PONYTAIL HOLDERS
Here's how to dress up that ponytail. Jade, coral, turquoise and other natural stoned ponytail holders are the trick. These are great because most of the time you can coordinate necklaces and other jewelry to match easily, especially if you're wearing a mixture of different colored stones/beads. Look much more put-together than with a plain black elastic band or the long outdated 'scrunchy'. The extra good news on this one is that these go with anything from t-shirts to dressy tops to the little black dress and you can always let the ponytail holders make a statement on their own if you don't want to pair them up with jewelry.
Channeling the 60's again...think Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. Back then it was big sunglasses, red lips and a stunning headscarf. Of course, that's only one of the many different ways to wear them. They can be worn more like the headband approach as well, with the tail poking out from under your 'do for a little extra flair. Use a scarf instead of a hat or a baseball cap to disguise bad hair days, thinning/balding hair or even for days when there's no time to give it a good shampoo.
No matter which accessory or how it's worn, these are the trends that are going to be turning heads this summer. Good style is always hot, no matter what season!
